Breaking barriers, driving change: Women leading the future of transport

6 March 2025, 11:00 am

NEC Australia is proud to renew its sponsorship of the renowned Women Who Move Nations podcast, reinforcing its commitment to supporting diverse leadership and empowering women in the public transport industry.

The first episode of Season 8, launching on 6 March, features an inspiring conversation with Catherine Rinaldi, President of MTA Metro-North Railroad in New York. As the first woman to hold this role, Catherine shares insights into her career journey, from her legal education to leading one of the most transit-dependent cities in the world.

“New York is probably one of the most transit-dependent cities in the world. I mean, New York would not be possible if the public transportation system were not as robust as it is,” said Catherine Rinaldi.

Reflecting on her path into public transport, Catherine describes her journey as unexpected but incredibly rewarding: “You know, it was a very, sort of meandering journey. It's not how I thought that I would end up, but it's been an incredible ride. ...I just feel like I'm the luckiest woman in the world. It's just been an amazing experience.”

Hosted by Michelle Batsas, Executive Director of Government and Stakeholder Relations at Yarra Trams and PTAANZ Champion, this season continues to spotlight the incredible careers of senior and executive women in transport across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the US, and the UK.

Continuing a legacy of leadership and innovation

Season 8 of Women Who Move Nations will continue its mission of highlighting the diverse stories of women shaping the future of public transport. From operators and authorities to suppliers, educators, and advocates, this podcast remains a vital platform for sharing experiences, challenges, and successes.

Batsas emphasises the importance of hearing these stories: “It’s so important for all walks of leadership to hear from the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the women who’ve come up in a heavily male-dominated industry. The unique challenges and perspectives can bring a different lens to what it means to be a leader, and how our leadership can represent the diversity of the communities it serves.”

Season 8 will feature an incredible lineup of industry leaders sharing their journeys and insights. Additionally, this season will include two special NEC guests who will share their experiences in the transport industry and discuss the importance of advancing opportunities for women in the sector.
